General information

Together with folic acid, vitamin B12 plays a decisive role in blood formation. If one of the two is missing (usually vitamin B12), anaemia occurs. Anemia is an important sign of a possible vitamin B12 deficiency. Anemia is accompanied by pallor of the skin and mucous membranes, burning tongue, weakness, fatigue, lack of drive and dizziness.

In addition, the nervous system is built up with the help of vitamin B12. A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to a degenerative disease of the spinal cord. The signs of this disease are sensory disturbances, gait insecurity, muscle atrophy and muscle stiffness. Psychological disorders such as apathy, delusions, agitation, depression and disorders of memory and judgment may also occur.

Together with folic acid, vitamin B12 is involved in the breakdown of a substance, homocysteine, which is produced in a series of normal metabolic processes in every human being. However, if the concentration of homocysteine in the blood is too high, it poses an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
